In 1973 Mr. Harry Sheppard began Managing a local neighborhood store called “Idetts”. Shortly thereafter, the local corner store across from “Idetts” closed and Mr. Sheppard and his employer, Walter Samuels saw this as an opportunity to expand. The new location was named Walts with the primary item being ice cream. To supplement the seasonal declines of selling ice cream, they added fried chicken. Both locations were Managed by Mr. Sheppard for two years, after which, Mr. Samuels liquidated his interest in Walts and continued with “Idetts”. In 1978, Mr. Sheppard moved “Walt’s” to its current location at 527 Vandever Avenue, Wilmington, DE. As the business grew, he was able to purchase the building next door at 529 Vandever Avenue, Wilmington, DE and expand. Since then our building has been expanded two other times. Walt’s Chicken has become an iconic structure in Wilmington, perfecting our fried chicken and many side items. All under the leadership
and guidance of Mr. Harry Sheppard.
